BayHelix held its annual meeting
As part of its tradition, BayHelix holds its annual meeting every year in the San Francisco bay area right before the JP Morgan Conference. This year, BayHelix had its 7th Annual Meeting in San Francisco Mission Bay UCSF campus on Sunday January 10th. It is a whole day program with a member-only morning session and an open forum symposium in the afternoon. About forty members attended the morning session, including all the Bayhelix current and newly-elected board members. This session featured with a BayHelix annual review, the transition of current board to the newly-elected board, and a diversified topic of presentations. Dan Zhang gave an update on two ongoing key BayHelix initiatives in China; one is a newly formed taskforce on helping government with Thousand Talent program. The other initiative is aiming at supporting and partnership with SFDA. Through these activities, BayHelix intends to help Chinese government to better understand the international standards and practice in policy making process and enforcement. Guoliang Yu then introduced the Hangzhou Life Science Innovation Park proposal. Finally, Steve Yang gave a presentation titled “Ten Metaphors of R&D in China”. After that, the members broke out to small groups and had lively discussions on BayHelix missions and vision, metaphors, and innovations that could drive and shape BayHelix in future. The afternoon symposium started with a welcome remark given by the president of BayHelix, keynote presentation by Mr. Sean Darragh, Executive Vice President of BIO titled “Bridging the Gap between Fear and Opportunity”, followed by an inspirational talk given by this year’s BayHelix Lifetime Achievement Award winner Dr. Nancy Chang. Nancy shared her personal experience and career path and advised the young scientists and entrepreneurs to be persistent, passionate, and honest during their career development. The symposium ended with a panel discussion focused on the US and China healthcare reform and its impact on biopharmaceutical industry. It was moderated by Dr. Hongbo Lu, the senior analysis from Piper Jaffray, joined by panelists Alan Eisenberg, Executive Vice President from BIO, Dr. Bin Li, Executive Director from Morgan Stanley Research, and David Chen, COO from 3SBio.Over one hundred attendees were participated the afternoon symposium. The Science and Technology Consol Dong Jian Long from the San Francisco Chinese Embassy, Ginny Fang and Todd Rufo from city of San Francisco, Leping Li and Shichang Miao from CABS, Jay Chen HYSTA, and Nancy’s daughter and granddaughter also attended the meeting as invited guests. In addition, China Medical City delegation, led by the deputy mayor of Taizhou city Mr. He Rong, also attended the afternoon symposium.The conference was sponsored by GVA Kidder Mathews, Alexadria, Deloitte & Touche, OrbiMed Advisors, BIO, and Epitomics, Inc. The Chinese-American BioPharmaceutical Society (CABS) supported this event.
