MicuRx forms collaboration with Pfizer to develop antibiotics


Biotechnology companies MicuRx Pharmaceuticals in California and Cumencor Pharmaceuticals in China that is applying MicuRx's technology to develop antibiotics formed collaborating with Pfizer to develop antibiotics for drug-resistant tuberculosis in China. Under the deal, Pfizer will provide an upfront payment, funding for the discovery and preclinical development of antibiotics, and payments linked to the development and commercialization of any antibiotics developed through the partnership.

Mucurx was founded by Dr Zhengyu Yuang who was the founding scientist of Vicuron Pharmaceuticals Inc. (formerly Versicor), and Senior Vice President of Research, before Vicuron was acquired by Pfizer at the end of 2005. While in Vicuron, Dr. Yuan had identified 7 clinical development candidates. Dr. Yuan has pioneered the discovery of peptide deformylase (PDF) inhibitors as a new class of antibacterial agents which entered the human clinical trials. Prior to joining Vicuron, Dr. Yuan has worked at Syntex, Affymax, and GlaxoWellcome.

He received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Cornell University and B.S. degree in Chemistry from Fudan University.
