news_id: 35 Chinese American researchers recieved Stem Cell Research Grants
The California Stem Cell Grant Agency recently awarded 16 MM grant for 12 research projects. Among them three Chinese American researchers revieved the grants. Dr. Wange Lu, an assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Keck School of Medicine of USC, was among the 12 award recipients. Lu’s grant of approximately $1.4 million will look into the molecular mechanisms of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that can be programmed to become any kind of tissue in the body. Said Lu: “Our research ultimately will allow us to improve methods to create patient-specific iPS cells for individualized cell replacement therapy and disease-specific iPS cells which will help in research of the cause of diseases and screening for drugs to treat those diseases.”
Dr. Gene Wei-Ming Yeo at UC San Diego also recieved $1.38 million. Yeo will seek to learn more about the genetic mechanisms active in stem cells and about "reprogramming" adult cells to regress to a stem cell-like state. Dr Min Zhao has been leading the stem cell research at UC Davis also recieved the grant.
